Happy New Year everybody! 2015 has arrived and if one of your New Year’s Resolutions is to find a new job then it is important to be prepared for those rigorous interviews. While there are lots of obvious things to do before your interview –research the company, understand the role, think of examples of different skills – there are a few things that are commonly forgotten:
It might sound a little crude but bad breath is one of the biggest turn offs for any employer. Make sure that you take your mints with you!
Not dressing the part
For men wearing the right clothes is relatively straightforward: a suit with a smart tie (red or blue, not too crazy) is about it. While it might be fashionable not to wear a tie these days it does look smart and shows that you are taking the role seriously. It is slightly more complicated for women but generally if you have been told to dress for a “corporate” environment it is best to wear a suit, but if you apply for a role which is slightly less formal (e.g. marketing or perhaps IT) then a smart dress or top / skirt combination is a good idea. Don’t just stick to black and white – colour is more memorable.
Lack of confidence
Easier said than done, but be as confident as possible. Even if you are unsure about your experience, a lot of businesses will offer training anyway so are more interested in the person than their skillset. Remember to maintain eye contact throughout, smile, and be pleasant – just coming across as nice makes an impact.
Lack of enthusiasm
Whether you are applying to become a managing director or a shop assistant, you should show the same level of enthusiasm. Passion is imperative: they want to hire somebody enthusiastic and keen to work hard for the company.
Punctuality is one of the most important qualities of any employee and it is tested for the very first time in your interview. There is no worse start than arriving late so be sure to book a taxi well in advance – not only are Nottingham Cars punctual, but our drivers know the city inside out so if it emerges that the interview is actually in a very obscure area we will still be able to get you there.
