We’re now in the midst of the summer holidays for kids and it’s likely that some are getting bored already, particularly now that it has started to rain. The weather forecast is still looking bleak, so if you’ve already covered some of our things to do, what do you have planned for rainy days to come? There are plenty of events and activities for kids of all ages going on in and around Nottingham, and you don’t need always need to have a car to get to them. The Museum of Nottingham Life, Brewhouse Yard Museum Open Monday – Sunday 12pm – 4pm, £2.50 per person with FREE entry for under 5s. Completely indoors, this museum tells the fascinating story of the changing life of Nottingham over the last 300 years exploring social, working and lifestyle history of the population of Nottingham. Children will love the interactivity that some historical objects will bring together with the reconstructed rooms of the five 17th century style cottages which tell the story of the people that once lived there. Kids of school age may also be interested in the reconstructed Victoria Schoolroom which is a shocking contrast to what classrooms in Nottingham today now look like.

Greens Windmill and Science Centre Open Wednesday to Sunday 10pm – 4pm, FREE entry. Often forgotten by the people who have lived in Nottingham their entire life, this museum holds a big part of Nottingham’s history. While the beauty of the windmill is probably best seen on a beautiful summer’s day, the museum does hold some regularly changing events which are guaranteed to keep the kids quiet. This month sees three cookery workshops, including pizza making, salt dough modelling and Meteor strike cookies. Click here for more information on their programme of events. The windmill, built by the father of scientist and mathematician George Green also explores the works of George Green and his contribution to science while experimenting with light and electricity. Educational and fun.

Nottingham Industrial Museum, Wollaton Park Open Saturday, Sunday and bank Holidays 11pm – 5pm, Adults £2, Children £1 This museum features working and stationary steam and diesel engines to reflect the historical local industries of Nottingham including mining, motor cycles and the prestigious lace industry. The last Sunday of every month sees the museum come to life with ‘Steam Sunday’s’ which showcases some of the steam engines in full working order. Located in the grounds of Wollaton Park, it is easily accessible with a Nottingham Cars taxi.

The Lost City Adventure Golf, The Cornerhouse Open Monday to Sunday 10.30am – 11pm, prices vary according to 18 hole or 36 hole courses An ideal activity for all the family whatever your age, this brings something competitive to the school holidays. Situated in the heart of Nottingham, the activity offers two different courses which are completely landscaped and promotes the experience of playing amid a thunder and lightning storm without having to get wet. All putters and colour coded balls are provided. There’s also a bar indoors which offers the opportunity for refreshments after a long-lasting game. No need to book.

Nottingham Climbing Centre, Old Basford Open Monday to Friday 10am- 10pm, Weekends 10am – 7pm, Prices vary. £3 registration fee required. With experienced climbers on hand and qualified instructors, the centre boasts 800 square metres of climbing wall and welcomes children and adults from 7 years and older, whether you’re a beginner or a professional. Bouldering (unroped climbing), top roping and lead climbing are offered at the indoor centre, but if you’re not as much of a daredevil as the kids, a small bar on the balcony offers refreshments so you can kick back and watch. They also cater for kids birthday parties.

Pot N’ Kettle, Beeston Open Monday – Saturday 10am – 4pm, (during school holidays) Prices depend on the products you choose. Children and their parents are likely to have fun here putting their creativities to good use. Located a short drive from Nottingham city centre and easily accessible with one of our pre-booked taxis, visitors are encouraged to create a memorable masterpiece by designing and painting a pot of their choosing. It is likely that younger children will be kept occupied for hours here. You can then take your creative pieces home and furnish your home. Langar Kart and Quad Centre, Langar Open Tuesday – Sunday, 10am – 10pm, Prices vary according to length and time on track. Located a short drive from Nottingham’s City Centre, just state your destination and Langar Go carting and we will give you your fare quote. Ideal for a group of kids or the whole family, this track is one of the longest in the Midlands, with a flyover section for a bit of excitement, and all indoors to escape the rain. There are varied race formats for adults and juniors, so ensure you ring ahead to avoid disappointment. We’re sure you’ll get the racing bug.

Lakeside Arts Centre, University Park Click here for opening times and prices. The Arts Centre is home to everything from Music through to Art exhibitions and theatre so be sure to check out their programme of events. The Arts Investigators scheme is perfect to help 7 – 12 year olds gain a better understanding of art. Activity bags are available from one of the gallery’s which include an etch a sketch, magnifying glass, paper, scissors, pencil and activity sheet which encourage children to ask questions about the art exhibited at the centre.
